Garden Update

Well, I apologize that I haven't been writing lately but I've been busy getting the garden together and job hunting at the same time. Here's some pictures of the garden and how it's been progressing. Here are the Trelisses that I recently added to the garden. They will provide some much needed privacy as soon as I can get the Morning Glories I planted to cooperate.

I also have the Square Foot raised beds coming along very nicely.

I redid the area where the Bird Feeders are and put in a little bird bath and some Purple Conehead Flowers, Sedum, Bleeding Hearts and some other plants.

And I added a little footbridge over the area that tends to pool and gets all muddy and yucky....little Ms. Bonnie wasn't too happy about having to get her paws all yucky while trying to get out the grass in the back yard, and quite frankly neigther was I.

And of course all of this work was done under the careful observation of "the supervisor" while he sunbathed from a nice comfy chair...

My Square Foot Garden

Thankfully the long cold winter is finally over and I've been able to actually get out in my garden.

Just got my three 6 foot high by 4 foot wide Trellises up and finished, which will also provide some MUCH needed privacy while we are on the Patio! I planted some Morning Glory along the base of each Trellis and will train them up each Trellis.

I also got 3 Raised Beds in which I will be using to do my Square Foot Gardening this year. This morning I filled all the boxes with soil, manure and good old fashioned compost! Then it was time to get my onion sets, potatoes, carrots, radish, beets, broccoli and sprouts in. I won't be planting the rest of my veggies till after Mother's Day as it is still a bit chilly here in NEPA, but my root plants should be OK as they will still have the warmth from the ground and soil to protect them.

Now all I need is some good 'ol sunshine and a little water now and again and I'll have the freshest veggies one can find!

Has anyone see the price of it lately? YIKES! Even the Generic Brands are upto almost $2 a can!

Today while I was in Wegmans I came across a really neat product called "MISTO". Basically you can pour "any oil" (as the instructions say) half way into it and use it to spray on food, pans, the BBQ. I grabbed one and brought it home and put Canola Oil in it. Worked GREAT! And it will no doubt pay for itself ($14) in just about no time!

Sunny Saturday

It sure was a beautiful Saturday morning!

Took the Pups to the Pet Expo today. We got a ton of "freebies" and some frisbees too lol! Most of all the baby (she's 23 weeks old) finally got to socialize with other dogs other than her brother. They had an off leash area that was fenced in and I thought "perfect!" She was a little cautious at first and just followed him around at first but then she just jumped right on in and was having the time of her life playing with all the other doggies.

My male dog in the meantime was also having a blast as he was the only boy dog in the fenced off area. Much to my embarrassement he tried to be a little too friendly with a couple of the little ladies in pink sweaters there and I had to correct him and remind him to watch his gentlemanly manners lol! It's been a long hard winter and it was very hard to get out of the house with all the snow and ice we had so a break like this was good for both of them and me as well.

Community Gardens

With the Recession still raging on and Spring right around the corner (hopefully - I can't take much more of this cold and snow) Community Gardens seem to make cents (pun intended). I've been growing my own veggies in my back yard for a few years now and it certainly does help with the family budget. Also, I know where that food I'm putting on my table is coming from and what was sprayed or rather not sprayed on it. And to top it off I get that much needed exercise that the medical gurus are always talking about.

For those who don't have space in their yard or don't have a yard a Community Garden certainly is the way to go!

Just picked up my copy of A Prmitive Place Holiday Edition over the weekend and boy was it well worth the wait! The folks over at A Primitive Place outdid themselves on this! I spent Saturday night till 2:30 am just curled up on the sofa next to the fireplace with a nice glass of wine, Yanni playing softly in the background (Yes, I said Yanni - I happen to love his music) and went through all 124 pages of this wonderful magazine from cover to cover.

Now what's better than to spend a lazy summer day, even if it's slightly interupted by a rain storm, with a Prim Friend? Absolutely Nothing!

Yesterday Danny-Boy and I took a treak out to see Patti from "The Brickhouse Craft Store" We had a wonderful time just sitting and chatting on "The Porch" while Howie and Danny-Boy had a great time playing together.

For anyone who hasn't done so yet, you MUST get out to see Patti at her shop! She has such great things and I even got a preview of what just arrived for the fall. They look MUCH better in person than in the photos she put up on her blog. She and Tim are also cooking up a batch of some wonderful new bird houses and get ready for the to-die-for yummy smells from the candle tarts she just made! I can't wait to get out there again once the Harvest Season arrives to see what other goodies she has in the shop then.

Patti, thanks for the wonderful afternoon and I'll see you again in the Fall!

His Eye Is On The Sparrow

Today as I was cleaning the house I happened to look out the patio doors only to see a large crow beating up a small little sparrow by the bird feeders. As I opened the door to go out and chase off the offender, he picked up the little sparrow and attempted to fly off with it.

As I approached the little sparrow on the ground I could see that it was still breathing and flapping it's wings so I went inside got some gloves and went back out to pick the little poor bird up and bring it inside to try and administer some first aid to the poor little thing. I placed some newspaper in an old bird cage I had and added some bird seed and water and then gently placed the tiny bird in the cage and helped it drink some water.

Unfortunately, after a few sips of water the wounds this little bird suffered proved to be too much for it to overcome and as I watched and petted and tried to calm it it quietly chirped to me as if to say "thank you" and then breathed it's last breath and went off to meet it's creator, God Our Father.

I actually cried when this tiny bird passed and a flood of emotions overcame me. We live in a turbulent world these days and I myself have been going through some trying times these past 16 months since I lost my job due to the current economic climate. There have been many nights I've sat up and worried about the future - will I be able to pay the mortgage, put food on the table, pay the bills that seem to come due just as it seems I've just finished paying them for the previous month - and I admit I have missed church more than a few times as I question why God has allowed this to happen to me.

As this cascade of emotions overcame me I suddenly remembered the passage from the bible that explains that if God in Heaven takes the time to watch over
even the tiny Sparrow, then surely He will watch over me. I was made in His image and therefore that must mean that I am even more valuable to Him than the Sparrow.

For you see, that passage in the bible proves that Our Heavenly Father loves each and every one of us.... We each are special to Him and there isn't a circumstance in our life that He doesn't know about. You may feel insignificant just like the Sparrow. Feel that you don't matter to anyone, that no one would notice if you just disappeared. Well God would notice. Just as He sees when the Sparrow falls, He sees when we fall too. He wants to pick us up and hold us close, He wants to tell us that He loves us.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you that you love me, even when I don't deserve it. Thank you that you sent your Son Jesus to die for me. Thank you that because Jesus died, I can receive your forgiveness and a place is reserved for me in Heaven. I now ask you to forgive me for all of my wrongdoings, with your help I will
turn away from them and I will endeavor to follow the plan You have for me.
I now trust and receive Jesus as my Lord and Saviour and I thank you that you love me,and that YOU think I am special.
Amen.

It was a powerful message God was sending me right there and then and there and I have to say that there is definitely something to be said about the saying "God works in mysterious ways"

Danny Boy's First Professional Grooming

Well, today was a big day for the little guy. He had his very first "professional grooming". PetSmart has a "Puppy Package for only $15.99! The groomer told me he was a "very good boy" and kept constantly giving her kisses! I wasn't sure how he would take things but I'm really glad he did well since he will be getting a lot of baths in the future.

We plan on putting him in his very first Show in a couple of months. I figure it will be fun for the both of us and I'll be able to meet a lot of people while on the Dog Show Track. Next week we start with "puppy training". Who knows maybe one day they will announce "Danny Boy" as the winner of the Westminster Dog Show? We'll keep our fingers crossed for him.

Oh, Danny Boy!

Well I'd like to introduce you to the newest member of my family. Here is Danny!

He's 13 weeks old now. He loves to give "kisses", Loves to play ball and play with all his other "squeaky" toys. He's learned how to "sit" and "shake" (paw), and he's doing real well with the "potty training" but we have to still work on the "chewing" issue. He is just a bundle of energy running throughout the house as fast as he can that I get dizzy just looking at him sometimes LOL!

The cats are not quite sure exactly what he is and are still cautiously looking at him. Of course he wants to PLAY! and he can't quite understand why they run away from him all the time LOL! I guess it will take time for the kitties to accept our little newcomer.

My Precious Little Ms. Katie

It is with great sadness and a very heavy heart I announce today the passing of my precious little pooch "Katie" on February 5, 2010.

13 years ago I rescued little "Katie" from the animal shelter and she became my closest confidant and constant companion. I know she is in a much better place now where there is no pain or suffering and I want her to know that she will ALWAYS be in my heart till the day that I meet up with her again at Rainbow Bridge.

Animals In Distress

Animals in Distress is a non-profit, tax deductible sanctuary for animals who have little or no hope elsewhere. Its programs are designed to prevent suffering and to save lives. They keep every animal admitted, providing medical care, behavioral rehabilitation, good food, shelter, and, most important of all, love, until a suitable new home can be found. No animal is killed because it is unwanted, too old, or injured.

The shelter receives no tax or public monies and relies totally on donations and fund raisers for its total operating budget. All the donations it receives are used for animal care expenses, and no one is paid for administrative, fund raising, and other non-animal care duties since they are performed by a dedicated group of unpaid volunteers. These volunteers work hard at events all year round to raise money for the shelter. They have a yearly Radiothon, pet photos at Easter and Christmas, a Walkathon, special setups at malls and festivals, raffles, bake sales, pet gift platters, craft and gift bazaars, and the sale of various items --- which are some of the ways that the shelter raises funds. Its monthly newsletter is its other main fund raising and public relations vehicle.

What a wonderful thing it is to bring a loving pet into your home from a shelter. All my "fur kids" are adopted/rescued and the amount of love I get from all of them is just simply amazing!

for reasons unbeknownst to me, his family gave him up

Maybe it was chewing everything that he could find,
maybe they were busy and just didn't have the time

They took him to the shelter and they just left him there
Outside, alone, in the cage...shivering and scared

Today the Government reported that our nation's unemployment rate has reached 10.2%. It is the highest that this rate has been since April 1983.

Government efforts to end job losses have had limited effects, although the current administration estimated last month that 640,000 were created or saved by the federal stimulus package passed earlier this year. But that's modest compared to the 3.4 million jobs that have already been lost since January 2009.

There is some small relief for the millions who are out of work though. Thanks solely to some kind hearted business men and woman around the country. Did you pay your bills on time this month? Avoided taking on unnecessary debt? Well, there's a fee for that.

Anticipating the implementation of the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure Act in February of next year, big banks are stepping up their aggressive treatment of those who hold cards that may be deemed too generous, or those who are studious in making payments.
Specifically, if a customer receives significant benefits from their credit card -- like frequent flier miles or other incentives -- but still manages to pay off their balance at the end of every month, their likelihood of being charged extra is going up.

"Starting next year, Bank of America will charge a small number of customers an annual fee, ranging from $29 to $99," USA Today reported. "The bank has characterized the fee as experimental. But card holders who have never carried a balance or paid late fees could be among those affected."

Additionally, Citibank introduced a new fee in August targeting customers who do not charge over $2,400 in a year. For not leaning on debt, account holders could be charged up to $90. The bank is also handing skyrocketing rates to customers ahead of the new credit card regulations -- including customers who have never carried balances month to month.

Saw some at Antique stores where they wanted a king's ramsom for one, but Slavation Army was good enough to give her to me for $12!

I also got the shelf-sitting "bunny family" all dressed up in their Christmas attire for $2 a piece

Then over at Goodwill I found the two skiing moose for $4.97 (still in their plastic bags and box - never opened!)

I'd been looking for a sofa table for quite some time now, but everything I saw was expensive....until I found this....It was actually described as a "twin headboard" but as you can see it just the perfect height for a sofa table, and it was in my "color" so no need to have to paint LOL! And the price you ask? $7.99 - I'll consider that a deal!

Fall Decorating

Keep SPENDING to aviod going Bankrupt??

Does anyone else here in FrugalLand agree that in order to avoid Bankruptcy that one should keep spending? I always thought that if you if couldn't afford something then you shouldn't buy it. And if you had a ca$h flow problem then that meant that you had to STOP spending, not spend some more!

Well, evidently our illustrious Vice President seems to disagree. He and other members of the Obama Administration seem to believe that in order to keep from going Bankrupt that we "the people" need to SPEND MORE money to avoid Bankruptcy.

I'd certainly like to know exactly what Mr. Biden, Mr. Obama and other illustrious members of this current Administration and Congress were doing while they were in those expensive schools, I'd like to know what they were doing other than obviously just taking up space.

Here is what Mr. Biden, Vice President of the United States of America, the man directly under Barack Obama had to say to members of AARP.

“And folks look, AARP knows and the people with me here today know, the president knows, and I know, that the status quo is simply not acceptable. It’s totally unacceptable. And it’s completely unsustainable. Even if we wanted to keep it the way we have it now. It can’t do it financially.“We’re going to go bankrupt as a nation. Now, people when I say that look at me and say, ‘What are you talking about, Joe? You’re telling me we have to go spend money to keep from going bankrupt?’“The answer is yes, that's what I’m telling you.”

Mr. Biden, as well as other notable politicians in the new Administration have obviously been in government way too long. He and his Administration colleges are obviously out of touch. Our country is heading to double the national debt under the recklessness of Obama, Biden, and the rest of the new administration, and this is the best argument that Biden has for nationalized healthcare, a program that is going to cost Americans an additional $1.5 trillion?

And here's another one of Biden's pearls of wisdom: “To those who say that our economic decisions ‘have not produced jobs, have not produced prosperity, and simply have not worked’ I say, take a look around,” Biden will say, according to prepared remarks obtained by The Washington Post.“‘Come see what I see everywhere I go: workers rehired, factories reopened, cops on the street, teachers in the classroom, progress toward getting our economy back on the move.’"

Workers rehired? WHERE?? The Unemployment rate is getting worse, not better.

How to make a Yo Yo Quilt

I absolutey LOVE Yo Yo Quilts, but they can be EXPENSIVE! I saw a small doiley one today in a shop but they wanted $30 for it. So, I decided to see if I could find out how to make my own.

I came across this very easy tutorial courtesy of About.com. Looks like I have a new project to work on.

First decide how large you want your yo yos to be and make a circular template twice that size plus about 1/2". A plastic or cardboard template works just fine--or use a round jar lid if you can find one close to the right size.

1. Place the circle template on the right side of your fabric and trace around it lightly with a pencil or chalk marker. Leave about 1/2" between circles.

2. Cut out circles about 1/4" past the line.

3. Thread a hand sewing needle with quilting thread. If you use regular thread, sew with two strands.

4. Knot the end of the thread and bring it up from the reverse side while folding under the circle on the line. The needle and thread should pass through both layers to create a seam allowance.

5. Continue sewing around the circle, folding under the seam allowance as you go.

6. When you reach the starting point, tug on the thread to gather the circle into a rosette. Leave a hole in the middle of the yo yo.

7. Distribute the gathers and secure the thread with a few backstitches, then make a knot for extra security.

8. Trim excess thread, re-knot and make another yo yo.

You might find that you don't need the marked line to turn the circles under for sewing. If you can do it without--great, it will save time. And if you don't need the lines, try rotary cutting the circles--but be sure to use a special rotary template to help keep your fingers away from the blade.

Joining the yo yos.

1. Arrange the yo yos into rows and experiment with the layout until you find one you like.

2. Align two yo yos, gathered sides together. Take several whipstitches along one side, backstitching at the beginning and end of the seam to help secure it. Make a knot if you'd like.

3. Repeat, adding more yo yos to finish the row. Attach rows together in the same way.

Yo yos can be sewn to a large piece of fabric, then sandwiched with batting and bound around the edges. Either quilt or tie the piece. You can also use the yo yos for dimensional applique. Apply yo yos to fabric with a blind stitch

Let's get behind her!!My grandson likes Hershey's candy. It is marked made in Mexico now. I do not buy it any more. My favorite toothpaste Colgate is made in Mexico now. I have switched to Crest. You have to read the labels on everything.

This past weekend I was at Kroger. I needed 6 light bulbs and Bounce dryer sheets. I was in the light bulb aisle and right next to the GE brand I normally buy was an off brand labeled, "Everyday Value." I picked up both types of bulbs andcompared the stats - they were the same except for the price. The GE bulbs were more money than the Everyday Value brand but the thing that surprised me the most was the fact that GE was made in MEXICO and the Everyday Value brand was made in - get ready for this - theUSA in a company in Cleveland , Ohio . So throw out the myth that you cannot find products you use every day that are made right here.

So on to another aisle - Bounce Dryer Sheets....yep,you guessed it, Bounce cost more money and is made in Canada . The Everyday Value brand was less money and MADE IN THE USA ! I did laundry yesterday and the dryer sheets performed just like the Bounce Free I have been using for years and at almost half the price!

So my challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop for everyday things and see what you can find that is made in the USA - the job you save may be your own or your neighbors!If you accept the challenge, pass this on to others in your address book so we can all start buying American, one light bulb at a time! Stop buying from China ...........(We should have awakened a decade ago......)Let's get with the program.... help our fellow Americans keep their jobs and create more jobs here in the U.S.A. !!!

Well, it certainly is a new era when it comes to Credit Cards.

My Capitalone card that I've had for 12 years now, I owe $0 to, and whom I'm a "Steller" customer with, a customer I might add who happens to have one of the lowest Interest Rates with them because of my "sterling record" with them, just got slapped with a $29 Annual Fee! HUH?! I've Never Ever paid an Annual Fee for any credit card I've ever had.

Well, of course I got on the horn and went through the loop of customer service agents only to be told over and over again that due to the bad economy that they had no choice but to do this to their best customers. My response to that was "well, I'm going to have to think long and hard if I want to continue doing my business with you then. I'll have to get back to you before this payment is due".

In past times one could fight these types of fees, but it certainly looks like those days are over for at least the next couple of years.

As was mentioned in the below article the excellent customers, who are irronically called "Deadbeats" are now paying for the true Deadbeats, you know, all those people who obtained credit and credit cards and couldn't afford to pay them to begin with. There is nothing more that irks me than having to pay or subsidize those Financially Irresponsible Individuals.

If all this that has been going on lately with the economy, be it credit cards, or mortgages etc etc teaches us anything, it's that the majority of Americans are going to have to become more Financially Responsible. Basically if you can't afford to buy and pay the cash for it, then DON'T buy it. Save your money till the day comes that you can plunk down Ca$h on the barrel or in the case of a Mortgage at least 20%. There is a reason why for decades the ol' standard was a 30 year fixed mortgage with at least 20% down, and the reason for that was BECAUSE IT WORKED! We've never before under the old standards seen the skyrocketing rates of Forclosures before as we are now seeing. Now even those of us who are and always have been finanically prudent are being penilized for this whole mess be it from fees being slapped on us or higher taxes!

But the banks (and some of the politicians, since in my opinion they were the precise ones who pushed for the laxing of lending laws to begn with) need to learn that you DON'T give money to people who can't afford it to begin with no matter who threatens to sue you on behalf of their constituants! Common Sense must still come into play here. You Don't lend money to people who can't pay you back!

Now the only problem I have is do I want to risk my excellent credit score tanking by canceling this card? Remember length of history and a little thing known as utilization come into play here. Since the key to a strong credit score is to build up a nice, long history of good credit and lenders love a consumer with a lenthy proven track record of payin down debt in a timely manner. And since length of credit history accounts for 15% of your credit score, that first card you opened way back in 1990 soemthing just can’t compare with anything else.

Then there's that little thing known as "Utilization" (a/k/a your debt-to-credit ratio). Basically, the idea is that it's better to have more credit available to you than less. Credit bureaus tend to drop your credit score if you're using too much of your available credit. For instance say I have three credit cards with different credit limits of $8,000, $10,000, and $15,000. I never use the first two, but routinely have a balance of around $7,000 on the third (not that I do this but you know what I'm talking about). This means I'm utilizing 21% of my total credit ($7,000 divided by my total credit limit of $33,000). Now if I were to cancel the two cards I don't use, then my utilization rate jumps to 47%, which in turn lowers my credit score. (credit bureaus look at both total utilization rate as well as the utilization rate of each card. While credit bureaus aren't outright with their precise scoring formulas, it is a known fact that lower utilization rates will significantly boost your score.

OK, I'm off my rant now, but I'm sure that most people can agree with my aggitation on this matter.

Enduring Unemployment in a tough economy

UNEMPLOYMENT.

We hear about it everyday lately and nobody is immune from a sudden job loss these days. We've gotten to the point that we personally know someone who has been recently laid off from their job or is facing a lay off in the very near future.

Times are tough, jobs are scarce and we all need to tighten our belts during these trying times. But exactly how does one go about doing so? It's important to know how to be prepared for the possibility of loosing one's job. Below are some tips for those facing unemployment and those who are currently experiencing it.

1. Getting your finances in order. This will help you avoid going into unmanageable debt and you won't have to settle for the first job that comes along just to get by. Make a list of your current assets and debts and determine what your average monthly expenses are. By evaluating and understanding your current, personal balance sheet it will enable you to prepare for a possible loss of income. It may be helpful to create a budget as well.

2. Know your job severance policy and other benefits. Make sure you acquaint yourself with your employer's severance policy now. By knowing how much you can expect if you're laid off it will help you calculate how much you need to save or set aside in an emergency expense fund.

3. You should also determine whether you'll be allowed to continue your health insurance benefits if you lose your job, and recently Congress enacted to the COBRA policy, in certain cases, that the employee only needs to pay 35% of the COBRA premium for a period of 9 months. It is IMPORTANT to take this COBRA plan because it's when you don't have medical insurance that disaster usually strikes - Also known as the "Murphy's Law".

4. Immediately create an Emergency Fund. Saving some of your money separate from regular savings or checking accounts can help you cover any unforeseen costs that may arise due to the loss of your job. An emergency fund should be equal to six to eight months of basic living expenses. Although in these tough times I would personally recommend at least 12 months of living expenses.

If you do lose your job and find yourself unemployed, here are additional tips for getting through a period of job loss:

1. I can not say this strongly enough. APPLY FOR UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE BENEFITS IMMEDIATELY! Waiting may reduce your benefits.

2. Prioritize!! Pay the most important things first: mortgage/rent, car payment, car insurance, electricity & gas, water, groceries, etc. Personally, I'd pay my mortgage/rent anyday over paying off a credit card. Remember: The mortgage company/Landlord CAN and WILL evict you from your home for non-payment. The Credit Card company can not do that. Pay them the bare minimum!

3. ONLY use credit cards for critically important expenses. A new dress, shoes or purse is NOT a critically important expense. The engine in your car going, since you may need this to look for a new job and then to be able to get to your new job, or a broken down boiler in your home during the winter months IS a critically important expense.

4. Contact your creditors and inform them you've lost your job but are actively seeking employment. Discuss options for token or reduced payments for a limited time.

5. Be proactive with your job search. There are a number of career centers and online search tools to help you start a new chapter in your life. Additionally, networking with friends, relatives, and family has potential to lead to your next position.

6. Stay positive and stay BUSY -

Volunteer. This is your opportunity to give to those less fortunate or help children help themselves. Pick a cause you're interested in and volunteer some time. It's also great for networking and you just might fin a new job! Be careful if you're receiving unemployment and volunteering. Some states considers this "work" and may disqualify you in some cases.

Become autodidactic (self-taught). Teach yourself a new computer program, how to draw, play the guitar, arrange flowers or make jewelry. Learn how to cook Indian food or another cuisine. What about photography? Write a business plan, research a new product. Now's the time to learn and you just might discover a new career.

Get all those chores that needed to be done around the house finished. Start a garden to help offset your food budget. Now is the time to do all those things you said you'd do one day if you ever had the time. Guess what? You now have the time.

7. Stay in touch with your positive-minded former co-workers. Accept invitations from friends and family members to go out. Invite your friends over to watch movies or to exercise together. The key is staying in circulation and staying positive through interaction with people.

8. Try to Focus on Today. Here is a very simple trick that has saved my sanity and given me the ability to go on, regardless of my fears. It works like this . Ask yourself:

Do I have a roof over my head today?
Do I have food in the cupboard today?
Is my electricity still on today?
Is my car still parked in the drive?

If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, take a deep breath. Relax. Today you are okay. You can't worry about what will happen tomorrow. You could win the lottery or you could be hit by a bus. It's an unknown and outside of your control at this moment. It's in the future and you'll deal with that when it occurs. But today, you are okay. Chances are tomorrow you will be okay. If you are worried about what might happen in two weeks or two months, you're wasting valuable energy on supposition.

Every time you begin to future trip, start asking yourself 'Today' questions. Entrepreneurs do this a lot. At times, when you don't know where the money is going to come from, today questions will help you appreciate what you have, calm you and prevent you from freaking out about things that in most cases, will never happen. And if they do, you'll survive.

The best thing to do to fight against depression and a feeling of helplessness during this time of unemployment is to keep your thoughts positive. Engage your mind in activity. Use this time to grow and learn. And don't give up on yourself and certainly don't let your fears rule your future.

The Loss of 2 Legends..

Yesterday we lost 2 legends that some, if not most of us, were brought up with.

Farah Fawcett lost her her long and courageous battle with cancer. Her beauty was more than skin deep and her love throughout the years touched each and everyone of us somehow.

And sadly in the same day, a few hours later, we were hit with the untimely death of Michael Jackson. For whatever some people thought Michael may or may not have been, one thing is for sure. The man was truly a Musical Legend and Musical Genius that inspired countless numbers of others.

One of my all time favorties from Michael Jackson was "Man in the Mirror". What a powerful song that was and today still is and it could probably teach us all a lesson or two, if we stopped to think about it for a minute...

To both Farrah and Michael I say R.I.P and God's speed!

Spent our weekends on the Jersey Shore...

Well, not exactly the weekend, but I did make a day out of it!

What a beautiful day it was. The sun was out, it wasn't too hot and there was a nice breeze blowing. Headed down there with my friend Bern early in the morning and what a day we had! Although a lot of the shops there are EXPENSIVE we did manage to find a couple that were reasonable for our frugal budgets. We picked up some cheap nick-knacks, a couple of cheap silver rings ($16 for sterling silver is cheap to me) and some T-Shirts which were 3 for $10.

We had lunch at some hamburger joint and I have to be honest, it was terrible! $12.50 for a "processed" burger, a handful of fries, about 2 teaspoons of coleslaw and a soda! Well, we just made note not to ever go there again! Next time we would much rather go to the Blue Pig in Colonial Hall. For about the same price we could have had crab cakes.

After lunch and browsing around the stores we took a walk around to see all the beautiful B&B's. They are anything but cheap. Honestly I don't know how they think they will do any business in this type of economy when they are charging prices like that. A couple of rental homes wanted $4,000 for 1 week and $1,600 for a weekend! I wish them luck in this economy but I think they are going to have a hard time with a lot of people now taking STAYcations.

Now below is a photo of a similar styled print that we saw in one of the Galleries down there. They wanted $249!! Since I'm frugal and I just loved the print in the Gallery, I'll just order this one in Black & White (or maybe in color) that I took myself from Snapfish, then I'll mat it, frame it myself and it will be a whole lot cheaper for the exact same styled picture.

$249?!! They're kidding right???? Well, I guess they'll find some poor soul who will pay that kind of money, but it certainly won't be me.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the Horse Drawn Carriage rides. Would have loved to have gone on one but at $40 for a 30 minute ride, so sorry but I just can't justify that. Especially in this economy. Just figure out how many hours you would have to work to pay for that 30 minute ride. So, I just took some pics of them instead as they drove by...

This afternoon I took a trip out to The Rodale Institute. It's not far from me and I wanted to find out about their upcoming courses. LUCKY me I actually got a Volunteer Apprenticership with them! I can't wait to start as I LOVE to garden and was recently laid off after several years from the Law Firm I worked for in New York City and well, things are very slow lately due to the economy. So this will give me something to do till I'm able to find another job in my field (Ha! No pun intended).

For those of you who are not familiar with the Rodale Institute was founded in 1947 by Jerome Irving Rodale as the Soil and Health Foundation. It continues as a 333-acre (1.35 km2) working organic crop farm with research trials and a visitor’s center near Kutztown, Pennsylvania. The Institute outreaches to farmers throughout North America and the world to promote economically viable sustainable farming techniques that benefit human health and the environment. Good morning all!

Bit overcast and cloudy here this morning. Got out into the garden though and took some photos of my garden I thought I might share with you.

Isn't she lovely? Got a great deal on her at our local Ollie's store. Her wing had broken off and all she needed was a bit of glue and she was as good as new!

These Iris are beautiful!

Here's the beginning of the veggie patch. I have Lettuce, cukes, Beans, snap peas, onions, carrots, beets, asparagus, some peppers, some toms (others are in containers around the garden), beets, cauliflower and broccoli all crammed in there LOL! Along with peppers and toms growing in containers throughout the garden and there is also large bucket that contains potatoes! I'm also growing a strawberry patch (in front of the Precious Moments Gardener at the foot of the veggie patch) and blueberries.

Isn't this little guy so cute? I got him at Lowes on Clearance last fall for $20. Now they want almost $50! Not too bad for a frugal find.

This little beauty I found at the side of the road on Trash Day. There was nothing wrong with her other than she needed a new pump. $10 fixed that problem!
